An Imperial Flag for an Imperial America
The United States has not been a republic for well over a century, and it's time we adopt an appropriate standard
It was never realistic to expect Donald Trump to engage in a non-interventionist foreign policy in his second-term. While it’s true that Trump didn’t start any new wars during his first-term, he also didn’t hesitate to enforce his will around the world either. Now Trump has announced his intention to nominate warmongers Senator Marco Rubio and Pete Hegseth as secretary of state and secretary of defense respectively. Both supported the war in Iraq, and both have expressed support for escalating America’s role in the Ukraine-Russia war and even more so in Israel’s conflicts with Gaza, Lebanon, and Iran. Hegseth, in particular, seeks for the next Trump regime to help Israel annex all Palestinian land in Gaza and the West Bank, which is not to mention Trump’s pick of Mike Huckabee as ambassador to Israel.
Given that Trump clearly intends to continue governing the United States as an imperial power, it feels appropriate that the U.S. government adopt a new flag. The Stars-and-Stripes is fit only for a peaceful republic, not a world-empire. My proposal is that Imperial America adopt the flag that Mark Twain, one of America’s greatest authors and member of the Anti-Imperialist League, described for the Philippines back in the 1800’s when the U.S. took over that country after “liberating” them from Spain.
And as for a flag for the Philippine Province, it is easily managed. We can have a special one--our States do it: we can have just our usual flag, with the white stripes painted black and the stars replaced by the skull and cross-bones.
Mark Twain
The American Empire’s role around the world is to spread death and misery and the flag of that government should accurately symbolize their role.
Obviously I don’t expect the Trump regime or the United States government to take my suggestion seriously as it is in their interest to continue spreading the propaganda that the U.S. government is a republic seeking only democracy and liberty for all peoples around the world rather than openly declaring their intent to dominate the world and to destroy anyone who stands against them. Donald Trump campaigned on a foreign policy of “America First,” which he betrayed within a week of winning the election. It is important that we non-interventionists, especially those of us who voted for him, stand against every blood-soaked decision that Trump, Rubio, and Hegseth try to take in the next four years.
